Interview with: Maia Lumsden

Q.) You recently won the $25,000 GB pro-series in Shrewsbury, your biggest tournament win to date. How did it feel to win a big event, and do you think that tournament winning experience will benefit you going into next season?

A.) It was an amazing feeling winning in Shrewsbury, starting from the qualifying meant playing seven matches in seven days so I was very happy I managed to sustain a good level of tennis for many matches in a row. The Shrewsbury club made the finals day such a great occasion to be part of, there was a big crowd and great home support for me being British so it made it extra special getting the win. I think the tournament winning experience will give me some aconfidence and momentum to start 2019.

Q.) The tournament win in Shrewsbury propelled you into a career high ranking of 313. Do you set specific targets each year in terms of ranking, or is it a case of just taking each tournament as it comes?

A.) For next year I’d say a big target is to get my ranking up into the grand slam qualifying events level.

Q.) Your all-round game was impressive throughout the GB pro-series event, which parts of your game are you specifically working on to improve?

A.) I feel like it’s one of my strengths to use a variation of shots and to play all round game style. I have been working on trying to do that as much as possible as well as coming to the net more often to get more volleys into play.

Q.) What are your long-term career aspirations and who was your idol to watch when growing up?

A.) To be able to compete in the grand slams and on the WTA tour week in week out. I really liked watching Agnieska Radwanska play she was a really skillful player and always very entertaining to watch.

Q: Which player finishes with the most grand slams? Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

A: I hope Roger Federer but I think Novak Djokovic.
